Most homes reach a point where the space no longer supports how the family actually lives — rooms doing two jobs, shared areas running short, a layout built for a different stage of life. The usual alternative is moving, which trades one set of costs for a larger one.

An addition avoids that, but it is the hardest kind of renovation to do invisibly. Many homes in Westchester and Fairfield were never designed to be extended, and structure, zoning, and the existing roofline all constrain what can be added and where it can meet the house. Done without a plan, an addition announces itself: mismatched proportions, an awkward transition, a room that reads as attached rather than part of the house.
